Fished with Stewart from Santa Fe NM yesterday. Stewart is one of my rare fishermen that’s more adept with a fly rod than he is with a spinning rod. Didn’t matter though as we were out for fish on the fly anyway. We made a run to Watch Hill as a pal told me an early run of Bonito has been seen there. Arrived at Watch Hill and didn’t see anything so we headed back towards New London and came upon lots of schooling Stripers. Mostly all these fish were slot sized fish and we were able to chase and fish them for a couple hours. Stewart ended up with LOTS of hookups on these beautiful fish. There were so many Stripers schooled up that if they didn’t eat the fly it didn’t matter as they would snag anyway. We were both in awe of all the fish and what a wonderful sight it was to see just so many of these great sporting fish. Once the tide stopped it was over so I headed west on the various reefs and actually the fishing only got better. Ran into some giant bluefish in the 15-20 lb class. Stewart landed one on the fly and 3-4 more on spinning rods. Kept heading West and took 4 drifts on one of my favorite reef and Stewart landed a nice Striper on each drift. Anyway….Big Stripers, huge Bluefish and a day we’ll both remember forever. WOW!!!
