So we fished just a week in North Carolina this year. In that week we were only able to fish two days. Cold weather and loads of wind kept us off the water. But the two days we fished were really epic. Caught lots of big Albies and a really big Redfish. My pal Charlie caught a huge (and I mean giant) redfish on a 9 wt fly rod. This fish was caught in only 30’ of water and took us an hour and a half to land. Really a fish of a lifetime. Two other fish of note. Charlie caught the boats biggest Albie ever at 22 lbs but the boat record only lasted a day. Another good pal, Sean, beat that fish the next day with a 26 lb buffalo Albie. Hard to imagine but this fish was 38” long. Not sure any of us will ever land another fish of that size. Our Sherpa, Darlene, landed plenty of small Albies but when I say small I’m talking fish in the mid to high teens. There really is no denying the Cape Lookout, Harkers Island, Beaufort N.C. area in October and November really is False Albacore heaven. We’ll be back again next year for sure.
